Eco-Friendly: What do you think?
Here in Portland, Oregon, living green is the standard. Much like the PETA activists, environmentalists will do just about anything to get their pro-green beliefs out to the public. Is it really that big of a deal? Does it matter that everyone practices the EPA’s Reduce-Reuse-Recycle methods? Whatever the answer is for you, I think that being conscientious about your decisions is very important and knowing your impact on the environment around you.
I am very skeptical of the USA’s recycling program and wonder if it is actually helpful or not. Rather than focusing on recycling, I have tried to focus more on using LESS. Conservation. The less paper you use, the less paper you waste. The less water you let run while you’re brushing your teeth or just standing in the shower waiting to wake up, the more water you conserve.
I recently ordered a couple items from BestBuy.com. A mini displayport to DVI apple adapter and a simple jump drive. BestBuy seems to not be too worried about wasting shipping materials seeing as they put the PAPER-THIN jump drive into a (relatively) large box. Watch the video below for my thoughts.
Do you think that being green is still a perk in our lifestyles or has it become more of a requirement? Let me know!

Here’s the thing. The cable can be crushed in shipping and there would be no harm. However if the flash drive were crushed in shipping there is a good chance that it would break and the cost of returning the item and sending a new one will cost more then the item itself.

Aaron, very good point. I am pretty sure that I have received CDs through the mail in a padded envelope, as well! I just would assume that the plastic casing along with the USB device’s plastic packaging would be enough. I’m glad you brought that up, though. Hmmm….

@Nick – Well it seems “being green” is certainly not a requirement in our lifestyle if Best Buy are sending out paper thin orders in small planet sized cardboard boxes. How’s things BTW? Long time no speak
@Aaron – if damaged goods was the cause of concern then I would hope that they would send goods out in boxes a little more sturdier than the dodge one that Nick received. Not to mention the wonders that beautiful box is doing for corporate image. You know what I mean?

JJ! Thanks for the comment! I’ve been great! We should catch up soon! I am still baffled by the horribly wasteful packaging I’ve been receiving some shipments in and I wonder if corporations like Best Buy would rather just waste the resources to save time and money…? Of course they would.
