The Importance of a Brand

Branding is an essential step in the creation of a company. Its the way the public sees the company. This includes the company’s design elements including logo, website, business cards, letterhead, packaging, advertising, & commercials, but also the company’s spokespeople, values, actions, performance, quality, efficiency, professionalism, etc. Its really important to establish the brand of your company to be consistent with your values and mission statements from the beginning.

The history of a brand goes back to burning marks on cattle and livestock. The brand represents the creator or provider of that product. When scanning the aisles of the grocery store, we see company brands on their product. They made it and are providing it to us: the general public. Subconsciously and immediately everyone makes associations with these brands. Within a fraction of a second I might choose to pass the store brand cereal and choose a name brand. I’ve just associate the quality, the taste, the packaging, the branding with the name brand.

The goal of branding a new product or company through design is to create this association visually through the packaging, logo design, website, etc. and give the public the feeling that your product is as good as their preferred product, if not better. You’ve only got a few seconds to make your impression so the next time they scan the aisles of the grocery store your brand is the product they want.
